NOS_KIT.ZIP NOS TCP/IP INSTALLATION KIT 3/15/91
This is a pre-release copy of the "install" program for KA9Q's (NOS) TCP/IP
package for the IBM-PC. The installation performed by this program is
intended for Ham Radio (hard-wire LAN support is not included). The program
is also specific to the version made available as "901130" (but will most
likely work fine with the most recent, newer releases). To use, follow these
steps:
- This kit is currently intended to be distributed on 720k or
larger diskettes (support for multiple floppy distribution is
coming next). Unzip the archive of files onto a blank floppy.
- If you don't have a 720k or larger floppy drive, copy the
files to disks you can use. I suggest putting the nos_exe.*
files on one 360k disk, and all the others on a second disk.
Then create a subdirectory on your hard disk (you *do* have a
hard disk, right?), and copy all the files into it.
- Change drives and directories so that when you do a "dir", you
get a list of all the files on this distribution. For example,
if your 720k floppy drive is drive A:, just type: "A:<ENTER>".
If you have copied the distribution files into the directory
called "\dist" on "drive C:", then first change to drive C by
typing: "C:<ENTER>", and then change directories: "cd \dist".
- Read the "readme" file, and then run "install".
You will still have to "hand-edit" the "domain.txt" file to add other IP
station's addresses, and also the "ftpusers" file to enable other users to
be able to "log in" to your system. In the "autoexec.net" file, the first
interface chosen in the install list, will automatically be made the port
to be used for default routing. This likely will not be desirable in all
cases. If you choose the DRSI or PC100 interface, the default settings of
I/O address and interrupt may not be correct for your particular config.
Read the ~/pub/doc/nos.doc file (huge thanks to Bill Simpson for his work on
the NOS documentation!)
Be careful, I still don't have a lot of error checking (sanity checking?) in
the code. This installation kit was a quick 'hack' to help me get new users
in my area off on the right foot. My telephone consultation time with these
new guys has decreased dramatically. Initial mission accomplished! Now
I've got more time to go off and work on the type of installation program I
*really* want! If anyone feels a strong need to have the C source for the
install program, I will make it available. I'd prefer that it didn't get
too widely spread at this point, since it was a quick cut-and-paste of small
chunks of other programs I have written (the source is fairly embarrassing),
and I'm currently working on a 'clean' version that will be "script-driven"
for easy modification and customization.
Please send comments/questions/suggestions about this installation procedure
